Mixed polyvalent-monovalent metal coating for carbon-graphite fibers
An improved coating of gasification catalyst for carbon-graphite fibers is provided comprising a mixture of a polyvalent metal such as calcium and a monovalent metal such as lithium. The addition of lithium provides a lighter coating and a more flexible coating when applied to a coating of a carboxyl containing resin such as polyacrylic acid since it reduces the crosslink density. Furthermore, the presence of lithium provides a glass-like substance during combustion which holds the fiber together resulting in slow, even combustion with much reduced evolution of conductive fragments. The coated fibers are utilized as fiber reinforcement for composites
The MMT API: A Generic MKM System
The MMT language has been developed as a scalable representation and
interchange language for formal mathematical knowledge. It permits natural
representations of the syntax and semantics of virtually all declarative
languages while making MMT-based MKM services easy to implement. It is
foundationally unconstrained and can be instantiated with specific formal
languages.
The MMT API implements the MMT language along with multiple backends for
persistent storage and frontends for machine and user access. Moreover, it
implements a wide variety of MMT-based knowledge management services. The API
and all services are generic and can be applied to any language represented in
MMT. A plugin interface permits injecting syntactic and semantic idiosyncrasies

Propagation of the First Flames in Type Ia Supernovae
We consider the competition of the different physical processes that can
affect the evolution of a flame bubble in a Type Ia supernovae -- burning,
turbulence and buoyancy. Even in the vigorously turbulent conditions of a
convecting white dwarf, thermonuclear burning that begins at a point near the
center (within 100 km) of the star is dominated by the spherical laminar
expansion of the flame, until the burning region reaches kilometers in size.
Consequently flames that ignite in the inner ~20 km promptly burn through the
center, and flame bubbles anywhere must grow quite large--indeed, resolvable by
large-scale simulations of the global system--for significant motion or
deformation occur. As a result, any hot-spot that successfully ignites into a
flame can burn a significant amount of white dwarf material. This potentially
increases the stochastic nature of the explosion compared to a scenario where a
simmering progenitor can have small early hot-spots float harmlessly away.
Further, the size where the laminar flame speed dominates other relevant
velocities sets a characteristic scale for fragmentation of larger flame
structures, as nothing--by definition--can easily break the burning region into
smaller volumes. This makes possible the development of semi-analytic
descriptions of the earliest phase of the propagation of burning in a Type Ia
supernovae, which we present here. Our analysis is supported by fully resolved

Temporal Evolution of the Size and Temperature of Betelgeuse's Extended Atmosphere
We use the Very Large Array (VLA) in the A configuration with the Pie Town
(PT) Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) antenna to spatially resolve the extended
atmosphere of Betelgeuse over multiple epochs at 0.7, 1.3, 2.0, 3.5, and 6.1
cm. The extended atmosphere deviates from circular symmetry at all wavelengths
while at some epochs we find possible evidence for small pockets of gas
significantly cooler than the mean global temperature. We find no evidence for
the recently reported e-MERLIN radio hotspots in any of our multi-epoch VLA/PT
data, despite having sufficient spatial resolution and sensitivity at short
wavelengths, and conclude that these radio hotspots are most likely
interferometric artefacts. The mean gas temperature of the extended atmosphere
has a typical value of 3000 K at 2 and decreases to 1800 K at 6
, in broad agreement with the findings of the single epoch study
from Lim et al. (1998). The overall temperature profile of the extended
atmosphere between can be
described by a power law of the form ,
with temporal variability of a few 100 K evident at some epochs. Finally, we
present over 12 years of V band photometry, part of which overlaps our
multi-epoch radio data. We find a correlation between the fractional flux
density variability at V band with most radio wavelengths. This correlation is
likely due to shock waves induced by stellar pulsations, which heat the inner
atmosphere and ionize the more extended atmosphere through radiative means.
Stellar pulsations may play an important role in exciting Betelgeuse's extended
atmosphere

Effects of Electron Correlations on Hofstadter Spectrum
By allowing interactions between electrons, a new Harper's equation is
derived to examine the effects of electron correlations on the Hofstadter
energy spectra. It is shown that the structure of the Hofstadter butterfly ofr
the system of correlated electrons is modified only in the band gaps and the
band widths, but not in the characteristics of self-similarity and the Cantor

Pasteurella multocida Heddleston serovar 3 and 4 strains share a common lipopolysaccharide biosynthesis locus but display both inter- and intrastrain lipopolysaccharide heterogeneity
Pasteurella multocida is a Gram-negative multispecies pathogen and the causative agent of fowl cholera, a serious disease of poultry which can present in both acute and chronic forms. The major outer membrane component lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is both an important virulence factor and a major immunogen. Our previous studies determined the LPS structures expressed by different P. multocida strains and revealed that a number of strains belonging to different serovars contain the same LPS biosynthesis locus but express different LPS structures due to mutations within glycosyltransferase genes. In this study, we report the full LPS structure of the serovar 4 type strain, P1662, and reveal that it shares the same LPS outer core biosynthesis locus, L3, with the serovar 3 strains P1059 and Pm70. Using directed mutagenesis, the role of each glycosyltransferase gene in LPS outer core assembly was determined. LPS structural analysis of 23 Australian field isolates that contain the L3 locus revealed that at least six different LPS outer core structures can be produced as a result of mutations within the LPS glycosyltransferase genes. Moreover, some field isolates produce multiple but related LPS glycoforms simultaneously, and three LPS outer core structures are remarkably similar to the globo series of vertebrate glycosphingolipids. Our in-depth analysis showing the genetics and full range of P. multocida lipopolysaccharide structures will facilitate the improvement of typing systems and the prediction of the protective efficacy of vaccines
A dependent nominal type theory
Nominal abstract syntax is an approach to representing names and binding
pioneered by Gabbay and Pitts. So far nominal techniques have mostly been
studied using classical logic or model theory, not type theory. Nominal
extensions to simple, dependent and ML-like polymorphic languages have been
studied, but decidability and normalization results have only been established
for simple nominal type theories. We present a LF-style dependent type theory
extended with name-abstraction types, prove soundness and decidability of
beta-eta-equivalence checking, discuss adequacy and canonical forms via an
example, and discuss extensions such as dependently-typed recursion and
induction principles

Seeing new opportunities to help smokers quit: A UK national survey of optometrist delivered smoking cessation behavioural support interventions
Background: Smoking is a risk factor for various eye conditions. Brief smoking cessation interventions have demonstrated effectiveness when delivered by a range of healthcare professionals. Optometrists are well-placed in the community to advise otherwise healthy smokers to quit, yet remain relatively neglected in smoking cessation research and policy. In a national survey, this study investigated self-reported practices of UK optometrists for delivering brief tobacco smoking cessation interventions to patients. Methods: A randomly selected sample of 1,200 optometrists out of the 9000 optometrists registered on the UK College of Optometrists database were invited to complete a 40-item, web-based survey assessing: training related to smoking cessation; current practice [i.e. the proportion of patients to which components of very brief advice (Ask, Advise, Assist) and other evidence-based smoking cessation behaviour change techniques were delivered]; and barriers/enablers to intervention delivery. Results: In total, 408 (34%) responses were received. Most (83%) optometrists received no training in practical skills for delivering smoking cessation support. A third (34%) routinely assessed smoking status. Fewer self-reported advising smokers to quit (22%), offering assistance (via referral to dedicated services) (3%), or advice on smoking cessation medications (2%). Perceived barriers included insufficient knowledge/training (81%) and time (65%). Optometrists were more likely to assess and advise on smoking cessation if they practised in Scotland (χ²(2)=32.95, p<0.001), an independent optometry practice (χ²(1)=4.27, p=0.39), or had received smoking cessation training χ²(1)=13.1, p<0.001). Conclusions: Substantial gaps exist in UK optometrists' current smoking cessation training and practice. Evidence-based training resources are needed to support the implementation of smoking cessation interventions into routine optometry practice. Implications: Optometrists are well placed in the community to delivery brief advice interventions to a large population of smokers. This survey provides a comprehensive description of current UK optometry practice related to the provision of evidence-based brief tobacco smoking cessation interventions to patients. Although optometrists perceive advising on smoking cessation as part of their role, numerous substantial gaps in current practice and training remain which need to be addressed through targeted interventions to increase implementation
